A blank tag is worth nothing until it has a number on it, and the number is worth nothing if it fades to a grey ghost by the second summer. Tag markers are a different animal from a shop marker: the ink is formulated to sink into the tag material rather than sit on the surface where sun and rubbing take it off. Y-Tex describes this one as a deep penetrating formulation and includes spare tips in the package, which is a genuine convenience because the tip is what wears out long before the ink runs dry. Their guidance is that two coats give the best result, so write the number, let it dry, and go over it again. The practical routine is to number tags in the house the evening before, not at the chute with cold hands. Write big and blocky, use the full panel, and give the ink real time to cure before the tags go into a pocket or a bag together. Ten minutes of care in January is what makes a number still readable from a quad in August.
