When you tag a mature cow you generally get one attempt at it before she is done cooperating, and a one-piece tag rewards that. It loads into the applicator as a single unit and goes through the ear in one motion, so nobody is standing at the head catch trying to seat a button while a thousand-pound animal shakes her head. The cow size runs four and a half inches by three, with a writing panel of two and a quarter by two and seven eighths. That is enough surface for a full herd number in characters heavy enough to read from a feed truck. The material is a thermo polyurethane that keeps its flex in the cold, and the point is Y-Tex's SurgiTip, a four-sided cutting tip that makes a clean incision instead of tearing through. Blank stock is what you want for replacement heifers coming into the herd, retags on cows that have lost one, and anyone whose numbering follows a system a printer cannot guess. Use the Y-Tags one-piece applicator. These are management and visual identification tags, and they do not replace an approved CCIA tag.
