One-piece tags exist because of March. When it is cold, the light is bad and you are working a calf in the straw with a cow that has opinions about it, the fewer parts you have to line up in a glove, the better. There is no button to drop in the bedding and no second half to fish out of a bucket. The calf size measures four inches by two and three quarters with a two by two inch writing panel, moulded from a thermo polyurethane that stays pliable in cold weather rather than going stiff and brittle. Y-Tex puts a SurgiTip point on it, a sharpened four-sided tip that cuts rather than punches its way through the ear. The tag is set with the Y-Tags one-piece applicator, not a two-piece tagger. Blank tags suit calving season, where you are numbering to the cow and cannot know the sequence ahead of time. Write them at the kitchen table with a proper tag marker, give the ink time to set, and carry a handful in a coat pocket. These are management and visual identification tags and are not a substitute for an approved CCIA tag.
