Tru-test solar panel regulator
An inline charge regulator that sits between a solar panel and a 12 V battery, preventing overcharge and shielding the battery from power spikes.
Details
A solar panel wired straight to a battery keeps pushing on a bright day long after the battery is full. Do that through a summer and the battery is cooked well before its time, which is an expensive way to save a small part. The regulator is what stops it. It sits inline between panel and battery, holding charge back once the battery is topped up and protecting it from power spikes coming off the panel. Wiring is four connections in total: two from the panel into the regulator, and two from the regulator out to the battery. Most Tru-Test and Speedrite solar panels ship with a regulator already fitted to the bracket, so this is usually a replacement, or the piece needed when a panel from another source is being put onto a fence battery. If you are not sure whether your panel already has one, look at the back of the frame before ordering. When wiring it, get the polarity right the first time and connect the battery before the panel. It is a small component doing a job the battery cannot do for itself, and it is the cheapest insurance in a solar fence setup.
