Tru-Test 500ohm load tester
A 500 ohm test load that mimics an animal touching the wire, so you can see what an energizer actually delivers under load rather than open circuit.
Details
An energizer reading a big number on an open circuit tells you very little. The moment an animal or a wet weed touches the wire the energizer has to push current, and that is where a tired unit or a poor earth shows itself. This tester puts that load on deliberately. It presents 500 ohms of resistance across the output, roughly what an animal completing the circuit looks like electrically. Read the voltage with a fence tester or voltmeter while the load is connected and you are seeing the output the fence will actually deliver when it matters. The usual jobs are fault finding and comparison. If the fence is weak, testing the energizer at its terminals under load separates an energizer problem from a fence or earthing problem before anyone walks the line. It is also the fair way to compare two energizers, since both are measured doing the same work. It suits any mains, battery or solar energizer with accessible output and earth terminals. Keep it in the fencing kit alongside the volt meter. It takes up no room and it saves a lot of guessing.
