Finding out the fence is down because cattle are on the road is the expensive way to learn it. Monitoring turns that around, so the fence reports a problem while the animals are still where they belong. The gateway is the piece that carries that message from the wire to a phone. It is the hub of the system. Solar-powered fence nodes out on the lines talk to it by radio, each node reaching up to about 500 m (1640 ft) with clear line of sight, and one gateway handles up to 50 nodes. No cell signal is needed between node and gateway, which matters in country where coverage is patchy. The gateway itself connects to the internet by Wi-Fi or Ethernet and runs continuously on a 100 to 240 V adaptor. From there readings go to the Datamars Livestock farm management app, where voltages can be watched over time and alerts sent when a section drops below a threshold you set. There is no subscription attached to it. Site it outdoors near the house or shop, where it can reach both the router and, by radio, the first node. Radio range depends on line of sight, so a gateway tucked behind a steel building will not do what the same gateway does on an open wall. It works alongside any brand of energizer.
