A battery energizer on a back fence line is fine until the battery goes flat and the only way to fix it is a trip out with a spare. A panel this size takes that job off the list for a small unit, trickling charge back into the battery through the day so the fence stays hot without anyone driving out to swap anything. This is the 10 watt panel in the Datamars solar range, built with polycrystalline cells in a rugged aluminum frame. It ships with a mounting bracket and a solar panel regulator already fitted, and the regulator uses diodes to stop the 12 V battery being overcharged when the sun is strong and the energizer is drawing very little. Size the panel to the energizer rather than to the fence. Ten watts suits a low-draw unit on a short run or a single grazing cell. If the energizer carries a larger joule rating, or the fence is long and weedy, step up to the 20 or 30 watt panel instead of hoping a small panel keeps up. Mount it facing south and tilt it steeply. In Alberta the winter sun sits low, and a steep angle both catches more of it and sheds snow instead of holding a drift on the glass. Keep the panel clear of bluff shade and check the terminals once a season. This one comes in as a special order.
