Oil is the densest energy source you can put in front of a horse, which is why it gets used for hard keepers and horses in work. It lets you add calories without adding the starch load that comes with feeding more grain, and most horses take it readily once they are used to it. The blend covers both sides. Flax is the recognised source of omega-3 fatty acids in equine feeding, and soybean oil brings palatability along with omega-6. Four litres in a jug goes a long way at typical top dress rates. Introduce it gradually. Start with a fraction of the intended amount and work up over a week or two, because a horse that gets a full dose of oil poured on its feed on day one will often walk away from the bucket and may loosen up behind. Feed according to the directions on the label. How much is right depends on the horse, the workload and what else is in the ration. That is a conversation with your veterinarian or a nutritionist rather than something to guess at, particularly for a horse that is already on a fortified feed.
