Strictly Equine gastric shield 3.8L
A liquid supplement of calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide and kaolin, given at 30 to 60 ml daily as everyday feed-room gut support.
Details
Horses evolved to trickle-feed and to produce stomach acid continuously, which is why the ones on two meals a day and a heavy work schedule are the ones people worry about. Buffering minerals in the feed are a common part of the response. Gastric Shield is a liquid oral supplement. Per 30 ml dose the label lists 2,430 mg calcium carbonate, 1,380 mg magnesium oxide, 810 mg hydrated aluminum silicate, which is kaolin, and 6 mg copper gluconate. The manufacturer describes it as supplying gastrointestinal nutrients to support a healthy gastrointestinal tract. The stated dose is 30 to 60 ml daily. Being liquid, it goes onto feed without the settling and sorting that powders get, and it is easy to measure the same amount every time. This is a nutritional supplement rather than a treatment. A horse showing real signs of trouble needs a veterinarian and a diagnosis, and management changes such as more forage, more turnout and less time on an empty stomach do more than anything poured out of a jug.
