What camelina oil is
Camelina sativa is an oilseed crop grown on the Prairies. Smart Earth Camelina Oil has a single ingredient: 100% cold-pressed, non-GMO Camelina sativa seed oil with no additives. The manufacturer states an omega-3 to omega-6 ratio of 1.2–1.6 to 1 and a one-year shelf life when the oil is stored at room temperature away from direct light.
Both the equine and canine oils are sold in Canada as Veterinary Health Products. Health Canada defines VHPs as low-risk products "used to maintain or promote the health and welfare of companion and food-producing animals" and they are "not for use to treat, prevent or cure disease." Read the label's own wording for what each product is intended to support, and talk to your veterinarian if your animal has a medical condition.
Camelina oil for horses
What it is sold as. Smart Earth sells the equine oil as a top-dressing for a horse's feed. Read the label for what it is intended to support; it is a feed supplement, not a drug.
Feeding directions (from the label). The recommended starting dose is 30 mL once or twice daily, top-dressed on grain, based on a 1,000 lb horse. If a horse is fussy, the manufacturer suggests drizzling a smaller amount on feed first and working up. Once the horse is used to the oil, the label allows the amount to be adjusted — follow the directions on the container.
Which size. The 3.78 L jug is sold as a 60-day supply at the twice-daily rate for one horse (about 126 days at 30 mL once a day). The 13.25 L pail and 18.9 L pail make sense for two or more horses or a barn that feeds oil all winter. Add a jug pump or pail pump to make the amount easier to measure; check the pump's own volume per stroke.
Camelina Plus Gastric Wellness Support. Smart Earth also makes Camelina Plus (and a 2-pack), a separate product. It is not the plain oil and has its own feeding directions on the bag; read them rather than applying the oil rate above.

The 16 oz bottle (about 473 mL) lasts a 25 lb dog roughly three months at the label rate; a 75 lb dog at 15 mL a day goes through it in about a month, so the 64 oz with pump or the 16 oz 2-pack is the better buy for big dogs or multi-dog households. Cautions printed on the label
The equine label says the oil is not for use with pregnant or lactating animals, not for animals with bleeding disorders or on anticoagulant therapy, and not for animals intended for food. The canine label carries the same pregnant/lactating and bleeding-disorder warnings and adds "if in doubt consult a veterinarian prior to using this product." Store both at room temperature out of direct light and use within a year.
Camelina versus flax and fish oil
