What camelina oil is
Camelina sativa is an oilseed crop grown on the Prairies. Smart Earth Camelina Oil has a single ingredient: 100% cold-pressed, non-GMO Camelina sativa seed oil with no additives. The manufacturer states an omega-3 to omega-6 ratio of 1.2–1.6 to 1 and a one-year shelf life when the oil is stored at room temperature away from direct light. Both the equine and canine oils are sold in Canada as Veterinary Health Products. Camelina oil for horses
What the label says it is for. Smart Earth positions the equine oil as a top-dressing fat source that supplies easily digestible omega fatty acids for horses that struggle to hold weight or whose coat is dull, with vitamin E for skin and coat condition. Those are the manufacturer's statements; the product is a feed-top supplement, not a treatment.
Feeding directions (from the label). The recommended starting dose is 30 mL once or twice daily, top-dressed on grain, based on a 1,000 lb horse. If a horse is fussy, the manufacturer suggests drizzling a smaller amount on feed first and working up. Once the horse is used to the oil, the label allows the dose to be adjusted; Smart Earth notes that owners looking to promote weight gain have gone up to four times the starting dose. Introduce any oil gradually — too much fat too quickly can loosen manure.
Which size. The 3.78 L jug is sold as a 60-day supply at the twice-daily rate for one horse (about 126 days at 30 mL once a day).
