Fly season in central Alberta is short and intense, and topical sprays only last as long as the horse stays out of the water trough. Feed-through supplements are the other half of the approach. Barrier is a powder built around garlic, combined with grape seed meal, distillers grains, diatomaceous earth and thiamine B-1. Per 30 gram dose the label lists 3,600 mg garlic, 600 mg grape seed, 600 mg diatomaceous earth, 300 mg thiamine and 4,500 mg calcium carbonate. The maker recommends starting at 30 grams a day for two to three weeks so the horse gets used to it, then holding at a minimum of 15 grams daily. The scoop holds roughly 15 grams, which keeps the arithmetic simple either way. This is the smaller of the two tubs and suits a single horse. Garlic powder picks up damp, so keep the lid on and the tub off the feed-room floor.
