On a permanent line fence the insulator has to do two things for twenty years: hold the wire, and stop the voltage getting to the post. The second is where cheap insulators lose, because the shorter the path between conductor and timber, the more the fence leaks every time the wood gets wet. Speedrite's answer here is twin spark guards built into the body, lengthening that path in both directions. The claw grips the wood post and there is a staple guide moulded in for fixing. It takes steel wire up to 4 mm (8 gauge), polybraid and braid, in UV-stabilised polymer, twenty-five to a pack. The 4 mm capacity covers standard high tensile through to heavier permanent fence wire, which is what puts this on boundary and line fences rather than the temporary end of things. Set the claws on the stock side of the post so pressure on the wire loads the insulator into the timber, and keep a consistent height along the run. A wire that dips post to post is a wire that finds grass in the low spots and drags the whole fence down with it.
