A twisted splice in high tensile wire is a compromise every time. The wire is too hard to make a tidy knot in, the twist works loose under tension, and the joint is a resistance point that quietly costs voltage down the line. Wire links do the job with internal spring-loaded clamps. The wire goes in, the clamps grip it, and the joint holds without wrapping or tying. They are made for 12.5 gauge (2.5 mm) high tensile wire, which is the standard permanent fence conductor, and come five to a package as Speedrite part 805542. Keep a package in the truck. Broken high tensile wire is a repair you make in the field, usually in bad weather, and a link takes a fraction of the time while leaving a joint that conducts properly rather than one you will come back to. Cut the broken ends square and clean before inserting them. Rust and burrs are what stop a clamp gripping, and a link on dirty wire will pull through under the tension high tensile carries.
