Details
An energizer that has quietly lost its punch is a common and expensive problem. Voltage on the fence drops, stock start testing the wire, and the usual suspects of grass on the line, a bad joint and dry ground rods all check out fine. At that point the unit itself is worth looking at. The 6000 and 6000i are the 9 joule stored, 6 joule output models in the Speedrite unigizer range. Speedrite rates them at 97 hectares (240 acres) or 96 km (60 miles) of fence under ideal conditions, and they will run from mains, a 12 volt battery or a solar setup. The storage capacitor is the component that holds the charge between pulses and releases it into the fence line when the unit fires, so its condition bears directly on the output the fence actually sees. This is the service part for those two models. The 6000i shares the same power section as the 6000, adding the LCD voltage display, ground monitoring and the remote, so the capacitor is common to both. Before ordering, rule out the fence. Nine times in ten a weak fence is vegetation, a broken conductor or an inadequate earth, and the 6000 and 6000i call for around 5.5 m (18 feet) of ground rod to perform to rating. If the fence is clean and the earth is right and the unit still underperforms, the internals are the next place to look.
