A standoff screws to the side of the post and carries the live wire out in front of the fence. At ten inches, this is the long version, with enough offset that an animal meets the hot wire well before it can lean on the fence itself. The extra length matters with cattle and with anything that pushes. A short standoff still lets a determined cow put her weight on the netting or the barbed wire while she is being shocked, whereas ten inches puts the wire far enough forward that she stops before she gets there. It is also the length to use where the existing fence is bellied out or the posts are no longer plumb. Fifty to a box does a substantial stretch of fence. The steel pigtail holds the wire without a separate insulator, and the whole point of the design is that you can wire the fence without pulling anything out. In snow country, remember that a standoff at chest height in September is at knee height in February. If the paddock is used through winter, either run a second wire higher or plan for that section to be out until the drifts go down.
