The bobbin is the part of a reel that takes the abuse. It gets dropped, driven over, loaded with wet wire, and left in the sun, and on the econo reel it is the lightest component in the assembly. When it splits, the frame, crank and handle are usually still perfectly good. Cracks generally start at the hub or at the wire slot and spread from there. A bobbin with a crack in it will still wind, but it flexes under load, the wire starts binding, and eventually it lets go with a reel full of polywire on it. Better to change it when you notice it than in the middle of a paddock shift. Cold is what usually finishes them. Polymer stiffens badly in hard frost, and a reel that has been knocked around all summer will crack the first time someone cranks it hard on a frozen morning. If you are winding in winter, let the reel warm up in the cab first and take it slow. This bobbin fits the econo reel. The geared and jumbo reels take different bobbins, so match the part to the reel you actually have.
