The short roll is the gateway roll. Most of the underground cable used on a farm goes under openings, twenty or thirty feet at a time, to carry the live wire from one side of a gate to the other so the fence stays continuous when the gate is open. 82 feet does two or three gateways, or one short lead-out from an energizer mounted on an outside wall to the nearest fence line. Keeping a roll on hand means the gate crossing gets done properly at the time, rather than being bridged with a length of whatever was in the shop, which is how fences end up with a mystery voltage drop nobody can find. Where the cable comes up out of the ground at each side of the gate is the vulnerable spot. Sleeve it, bring it up tight against the post, and clamp it to the fence wire rather than twisting it on. Frost heave works on a buried cable every year, so leave a little slack in an S below ground rather than pulling it tight between the two ends.
