Underground cable is heavily insulated wire for carrying full fence voltage where it cannot be run in the air: under a gateway, out of the shed to the fence, across a yard, or from one paddock to the next. The insulation is thick enough to hold several thousand volts against wet soil, which ordinary insulated wire is not. 165 feet is the middle size and the one that covers most single jobs on a working place, such as energizer to the first fence line, or a lane crossing with enough left over. Bury it deep enough to be below the plough and below the reach of a post hole auger, and put it in conduit anywhere it crosses a driveway or a spot you might dig again. Two mistakes are common. The first is using ordinary insulated wire, which leaks steadily through wet ground and takes the whole fence down in a wet spring. The second is nicking the insulation on a rock during backfill. Sand-bed it if the soil is stony, and record where you put it, because finding a buried fault in frozen ground in January is a job nobody enjoys twice.
