Details
An offset is how you make an existing fence electric without tearing it out. The steel arm mounts to the post and carries a live wire out in front of the fence, so stock get shocked before they ever reach the barbed wire or the netting. This is one of the highest-value jobs on an older place. A tired page wire fence, or a barbed line with a few loose spots, will hold for another decade once there is a hot wire hung off it, because the animals stop leaning on it. On horse properties it also keeps horses back off wire that would otherwise cut them. Fifty to a box does a good length of fence. The pinlock insulator holds the wire captive so it cannot be flicked out, which matters when the wire is slack in summer heat or when snow loads it. Set the offset height at chest level for the stock you are running, and where you have a bull or a determined cow, consider two offsets at different heights. Where drifts build, plan for the wire to be buried and either run a second one higher or accept that section is out for part of the winter.
