The output transformer is what turns the energizer's internal pulse into the several thousand volts that appear on the fence. On a unit the size of the 36000RS it is a substantial component, and it is one of the parts that can be killed outright by a lightning surge coming back down the line. A failed output transformer usually shows as no output at all, or output that collapses the moment any load is put on the fence. It is worth confirming with a proper tester at the terminals with the fence disconnected before ordering. Plenty of units diagnosed as dead transformers turn out to be a shorted fence or a ground bed that has gone high-resistance over a few dry seasons.
