Rod posts come in a range of diameters depending on what was bought when, and matching an insulator to each one is a nuisance. This one takes anything from a quarter inch to five-eighths, so a single box covers the fibreglass rods, steel rods and pigtail shafts most places have accumulated. The point of an insulator on a rod post is to hold the live wire off the steel. On fibreglass it also protects the wire from the abrasive surface, which will saw through polywire surprisingly fast. Twenty-five to a pack is roughly a paddock division on typical spacing. In snow country the mounting height is the decision that matters. A bottom wire set low will be shorted out by drifted snow for months, and a fence that is dead all winter teaches stock that it can be walked through. Many people run the winter line higher and accept that small stock can go under, or lift the bottom wire off the energizer entirely once the snow builds. Fit the insulators so you keep the option to move a wire without redoing the whole post.
