A standard joint clamp joins two wires running the same direction. An L-shaped clamp handles the join where a wire comes in at an angle: a spur running off to a water trough, a dropper tying two live wires together, a lead-out coming up to meet the main line. Making these joins with a clamp rather than a wrap keeps them tight and conductive. Right-angle joins take a lot of working load as the main line moves with temperature, and a hand-twisted corner join will loosen faster than almost anything else on the fence. Twenty-five to a pack is enough to tie in a whole system properly. The places these earn themselves most are the ones you cannot see: the join at the bottom of a gate post, the tie between the top and second wire that keeps the whole fence live if one strand breaks, and the connection where an underground cable surfaces. Do those with clamps and you spend a lot less time in February trying to find out why the far pasture went dead.
