Details
The jumbo reel is the simple one. Direct drive rather than geared, with a large bobbin that takes a long length of polywire. Fewer moving parts means less to break, and for people who set a line and leave it up for weeks at a time, the speed advantage of gearing matters less than having something robust. It suits back fences, lane wires, and the semi-permanent temporary lines that go up in spring and come down in fall. Hang it on the end post, run the wire out, and the frame is insulated from the spool so you can leave it connected and live rather than rigging a separate feed. If you are winding a long line in and out every day for intensive strip grazing, a geared reel will save you a lot of cranking. If you are setting up a few times a season and want a reel that holds plenty of wire and tolerates being thrown in the back of the truck, this is the one. Either way, keep it out of the mud, and do not run steel wire on a polymer bobbin.
