Knots are the enemy of an electric fence. A figure-eight in high tensile wire is a weak point mechanically and a resistance point electrically, and both get worse with age. A joint clamp compresses the two wires together over a proper contact area so the join carries load and current the same as the rest of the run. Twenty to a pack covers a season of repairs on most places. Use them wherever you splice a broken wire, tie in a spur, or bring an underground lead-out up to the fence. On a long run every unnecessary joint costs a little voltage, so the ones you do make should be good ones. The place this shows up hardest is midwinter. A marginal joint that reads acceptable in warm weather goes high-resistance when everything contracts and the contact area shrinks, which is exactly when you need the fence working and least want to be out finding it. Clamp it properly the first time, and when you walk the line each spring, put a wrench on the older ones.
