The connection between the ground wire and the ground rod is the weakest link in most earth systems, and it is almost always the one nobody checks. A wrap of wire around a rod looks fine on the day and is corroded to uselessness two winters later. A proper clamp holds metal to metal under pressure and keeps doing it. These are the heavy duty pattern, sold ten to a pack, which is enough to do a full ground bed and keep spares. Use one per rod, get the wire and rod both clean before you tighten, and torque it properly rather than nipping it up with a pair of pliers. In alkaline prairie soil, dissimilar metals in contact will corrode faster than you expect. Keep the ground wire and clamps galvanized throughout rather than mixing copper into a galvanized system. And when a fence loses voltage over a couple of seasons for no obvious reason, pull a ground clamp before you start walking the line. A green, powdery joint under the bolt is a very common answer.
