Speedrite geared reel
A geared electric fence reel with a zinc-plated steel frame and polymer bobbin, holding roughly 1,900 feet of polywire.
Details
The geared reel is the workhorse of strip grazing. The gearing means the bobbin turns several times for each turn of the crank, so a long line comes in without you standing in the wind winding one-to-one. Capacity runs to roughly 1,900 feet of polywire, less with heavier braid or tape. Frame and crank are zinc-plated steel, the bobbin is high-impact polymer, and the frame is insulated from the spool so you can leave the reel live and feed the fence through it. It carries by the handle or mounts on a post, and there is a guide to keep twine and tape laying evenly instead of bunching at one end. It is not made for steel wire, which will chew the bobbin and bend the crank. Stick to polywire, braid or tape. In cold weather, wind slower than you think you need to. Polymer gets brittle in hard frost, and a reel that has been dropped in the snow will crack if you crank it hard while it is still stiff.
