The lead-out from your energizer is not a place to economise. This is Speedrite's Extreme underground cable: 2.7 mm aluminium coated steel with a soft steel core, double insulated, and rated by Speedrite at three times the conductivity of 2.5 mm (12.5 ga) premium cable. It comes in a 330 foot roll. Underground cable does two jobs. It gets power from the energizer to the fence without leaking it into wet ground or nearby steel, and it lets you run a lead-out under a gateway, a driveway or a yard without a wire overhead. The double insulation is what makes that possible; ordinary fence wire buried in the ground is just a very good ground rod. The higher conductivity matters over distance. If your energizer is in a shed and the fence starts a few hundred feet away, a thin lead-out wastes power before the fence even begins, and you never get it back. Do not join cable underground — Speedrite is explicit about that, and buried joints corrode and fail in a place you cannot inspect. Use proper joint clamps and make every connection above ground where you can see it. Bury deep enough to stay under frost heave and out of the way of a cultivator.
