End-strain insulators do the hardest job on an electric fence. Line insulators only have to hold a wire off a post; an end-strain insulator has to hold the full tension of the run while keeping it electrically isolated. Get them wrong and you get arcing at the corner, a fence that reads fine at the energizer and dead beyond the turn, or an insulator that simply pulls apart in cold weather. These are the black end-strain insulators, sold 25 to a pack, which is the sensible quantity when you are building or rebuilding a fence rather than patching one. Use them wherever a wire terminates — corner posts, end assemblies, gateways, and anywhere the line changes direction enough to put strain on the insulator instead of running past it. Around here they earn their keep in spring. Frost lifting corner posts and wire contracting hard in a cold snap put loads on end insulators that a line insulator never sees. Wrap the wire properly through the insulator so the load is carried by the body and not by a sharp bend in the wire, and keep the tail well clear of the post — a tail touching wood is a slow leak in wet weather and a dead short once it ices up.
