A float valve does one job and does it without supervision. Water comes in off a hose or a plumbed line, the float rises with the level, the valve shuts. Animals drink it down, the float drops, it refills. The labour saving is not dramatic on any single day and it adds up to a great deal over a summer. Millside has been building livestock watering equipment in Canada for decades and this is the plain version of the thing they are known for. No electronics, no pressure regulator to fail, just a valve and a float. The honest caveat is winter. A float waterer is not frost proof on its own, and a valve full of ice does not care how well it was built. If it is going to be in service past freeze up you need heat on it, or a plan to drain it, or you will be buying another one in spring. Check the float and seat once a season. A valve that seeps is easy to miss until you find a wet spot and a water bill.
