Details
The difference between a bulk feeder and a tray is how many times you walk out to the brooder. A tray needs filling every morning and gets scratched empty by afternoon. This holds enough that a batch of chicks eats down over several days, which is the entire point of it. The lid is the part that earns its keep. Chicks will perch on anything, and anything they perch on gets fouled. Keeping the top closed means the feed in the hopper stays feed instead of turning into something you dump out. Sized for chicks specifically, with a feeding lip low enough that young birds reach it without climbing. That sounds like a minor detail and it is not. A feeder they cannot comfortably reach is a feeder they waste feed at. Rinse it out between batches. A warm brooder plus feed dust plus damp is exactly the combination you do not want to carry from one group of chicks to the next.
