A double wall fountain works on a vacuum. Water sits in the sealed reservoir, feeds down into the drinking trough, and stops when the trough is full because air cannot get back up into the reservoir. Birds drink, the level drops, air goes in, more water comes down. No float, no valve, nothing to fail. Galvanized steel is the reason to pick this over plastic in this country. Plastic gets knocked around a coop and eventually cracks, and cold makes it worse. Steel takes the abuse and takes a heated base underneath it, which is what you need to water birds through an Alberta winter. Three gallons suits a small to mid size flock. Fill from the top, lift by the handle, and set it level. It has to sit level or the trough runs over on the low side all day. Rinse the trough regularly. It is the one part birds have direct access to and it shows.
