The reel is the whole idea. A bird tries to stand on the top edge of the feeder, the reel rolls under its feet, and the bird gets down. What you save is the feed it would have scratched out and the droppings it would have left in what was left behind. Twenty four inches gives several birds room to eat side by side without shoving each other off, which cuts down on the feed that ends up on the floor during a squabble. Galvanized steel, so it hoses out and does not rust through after one damp season. At eleven dollars it is cheap enough to run two rather than crowd one. In a mixed age flock, spreading feeder space out is usually worth more than any single upgrade you can make to one feeder. Check that the reel still spins freely now and then. Feed dust and damp will eventually gum up the ends, and a reel that has stopped turning is just an edge to perch on.
