The slide does two things. Open, you have a full width trough to pour feed into. Closed down to a gap, birds can get their heads in to eat but cannot get a foot in to scratch feed out onto the litter. Most of the feed people lose in a coop is billed out of an open trough, and that is what this addresses. Galvanized steel throughout. It washes out, it does not crack in the cold, and it will still be in service in ten years, which is more than you can say for most plastic feeders at any price. Twelve inches is a small flock feeder or a second one in a larger coop. If it is going to be the only feeder for more than a handful of birds take the twenty four inch instead, because crowding at a short trough undoes the waste saving you bought it for. Slide it shut when you are not feeding if rodents are a problem. An open trough overnight is an invitation.
