Cutting a tag out with a jackknife is how ears get sliced, and it is completely avoidable. This tool has a hook that slips behind the tag stem with a cutting edge set inside it, so the blade meets plastic and not the animal. The jobs come up more than you expect. Pulling spent insecticide tags at the end of fly season, taking off a tag that went in with the wrong number, clearing an old tag before a new one goes in, and tidying up cattle that arrived carrying somebody else's system. In each case the animal is already restrained and you want the tag off in a couple of seconds without adding a wound to deal with. Work with the ear held flat, get the hook properly under the stem before you pull, and cut in one clean motion rather than sawing at it. Keep it in the same box as your tags and applicator so it is there when you need it. One thing to leave alone: an approved CCIA tag stays in the ear, so do not use this to remove one.
