Blue is the traditional partner to pink, and on a cow-calf outfit big enough to buy tags a thousand at a time it usually means the male side of the calf crop. Steers in blue, heifers in something else, and the sort at weaning becomes a job you can do from horseback instead of a paperwork exercise. It also works well in a feeding operation as a straightforward pen or arrival group colour. Blue does not get confused with the warm colours that usually carry treatment and risk information, so it stays quiet and functional, which is exactly what you want from a colour that is only there to tell you which draft an animal belongs to.
