If the number matters more than the colour, buy white. Black ink on a white tag is the highest contrast combination available, and it is what you want when a four digit number has to be legible from a quad, through a squeeze bar, or on a photograph somebody sends you from the community pasture. That suits registered and seedstock operations, anyone whose numbering carries real information, and any herd where the tag is essentially a name rather than a category. It also suits people who prefer to carry colour information in a second tag or a different ear and keep the main tag purely about the number. The honest limitation is winter. A white tag against snow and against a white-faced cow gives up some of the distance advantage other colours have, so it works best where you are reading numbers up close rather than picking animals out of a field.
