This is the tool the one-piece Z Tags are built around, and they do not go in properly without it. The tag has no button and no back half. The point of the tag is the piercing tip, and the applicator drives it through the ear in a single squeeze. The pin pivots as the jaw works, which is what lets the tag release cleanly instead of hanging up on the pin when you open the tool. In practice that means less fighting with a calf that is already tired of being held, and fewer tags dropped in the straw and lost. There is a spare pin carried in the handle. That detail is worth more than it sounds on the day you are two hundred head into processing and the pin lets go. Keep the jaw clean and free of dried manure, and check the pin before a big day rather than partway through one. Works with the Z1 one-piece cow, calf, long neck calf, feedlot and small animal tags.
