The small animal tag is a compact flag, roughly two and three-eighths inches by one and three-quarters, which is proportionate to a ewe or a doe rather than a cow. A full-size cattle tag in a sheep ear is heavy and hangs badly. This one sits where it should. Blue reads well on white-faced sheep and against the dirty cream of a wool flock in winter, which is exactly when most people are trying to identify animals from the far side of a pen rather than in a handling system. It also holds up as a colour code for a lambing group, a breeding pen or a buyer split. Fifty blank tags to a bag, so the numbering is yours to set. The tag is one piece with a self-piercing tip built into the point, so it goes in with a single squeeze of the applicator. On smaller ears that matters, because there is no button to line up and nothing on the back to catch on a feeder or a panel. These are management and visual identification tags.
