White is the one to buy when the number is what you actually read. Marker on white is the easiest combination to make out at a distance and the easiest to write cleanly on, which counts when you are lettering a hundred tags at the kitchen table the week before calving starts. The trade-off with white on calves is that it does not help you find one lying in snow. Some operations run white on the cow herd and a bright colour on the calves for exactly that reason, and some go the other way around. Either approach works as long as it is deliberate. These are the long neck calf size, which leaves the ear room to grow through a first summer, and they come blank, twenty-five to a bag. One-piece construction with a self-piercing point means one squeeze of the applicator and no button on the back of a small ear. These are management and visual identification tags. They are not a substitute for an approved CCIA tag.
