Pink on the heifer calves is one of those systems that costs nothing and saves a lot. Sex the calf when you tag it, and from then on you can count heifers in a pasture from the truck window, pick replacements without sorting, and load a straight run of steers in the fall without a miscount. This is the long neck calf tag, which gives more length between the ear and the flag than the standard version. That matters on an animal tagged at a day or two old, because the ear has a full season of growth ahead of it. Blank, twenty-five to a bag. Most people number these ahead of time and carry a handful in a pocket through calving. The tag is one piece with a self-piercing tip, so it is a single squeeze of the applicator and there is no button to line up against the back of a small wet ear. These are management and visual identification tags. They are not a substitute for an approved CCIA tag.
