Orange is the colour to reach for if you calve in snow. A newborn tagged in a March blizzard is easier to account for on the next round when the tag is orange, and later in the year it stays visible against brown grass and mud when you are counting pairs from the tractor at the feed ground. The long neck version gives more room between the ear and the flag than the standard calf tag. Calf ears grow and thicken quickly through a first summer, and that extra length is what keeps the tag hanging free instead of drawing tight. They come blank, twenty-five per bag, which suits an operation writing the dam number on the calf. The one-piece body has the piercing tip built into the point of the tag, so it is one squeeze of the applicator with nothing to load behind the ear. Working a fresh calf while the cow watches from six feet away is not the time to be assembling anything. These are management and visual identification tags.
