Coding the calf crop by colour is the simplest record system there is. Green calves are the green year, and five years on you can age a cow from across the yard without touching a record book. Green sits far enough from yellow and chartreuse to stay distinct once the tags have picked up some dirt. The long neck matters on calves in particular.
