Yellow is the colour most yards default to, and there is nothing wrong with that. Black numbers on yellow are about as legible as this style of tag gets, it reads in green grass and in a muddy pen, and it does not look like anything you have already set aside for a specific job. That makes it a good base colour. Run yellow as the standard and save the odd shades for pulls, for heifers, for a second owner. Colour coding only tells you anything when most of the cattle are wearing the ordinary colour. The set is stamped one through a thousand in sequence, enough for a large intake without repeating a number. Feedlot tags are the shorter, lighter one-piece tag, intended for a feeding period rather than years in the ear. Self-piercing point, one squeeze of the applicator, no button to load between animals. These are management and visual identification tags. They are not a substitute for an approved CCIA tag.
