If you only stock one colour of feedlot tag in western Canada, orange is the safe bet. It reads against snow, against mud and against a brown fall pasture, and it is the colour most people can pick out of a bunch at distance without having to think about it. The set is stamped one through a thousand in order. On a big receiving day the crew works straight down the strip, and every animal leaves the chute with a number already written on the sheet in front of you. That is quicker and more reliable than a marker, particularly when it is cold enough that ink stops flowing. Feedlot tags are smaller and lighter than the cow tags and are meant to carry an animal through a feeding period, not a lifetime. Same one-piece build as the rest of the line: the point pierces the ear as the applicator closes, and nothing sits on the back of the ear afterward. These are management and visual identification tags. They are not a substitute for an approved CCIA tag.
