Grey is the quiet one on the rack, and there are real uses for a quiet tag. When a yard has already spent its bright colours on the pens that matter most, grey becomes the overflow set, or the colour on something you want recorded without it jumping out at you every time you walk the alley. The run is one through a thousand, stamped in sequence. On a large intake that is the whole point. Nobody is picking numbers, the crew works down the strip, and the paperwork follows the tag instead of the other way around. Grey reads better up close than across a big pen, so it suits alley work, chute-side reading and matching records more than long-distance counting from the truck. The tag is the one-piece feedlot pattern with a self-piercing point, applied in a single squeeze with no button behind the ear. These are management and visual identification tags. They are not a substitute for an approved CCIA tag.
