Yellow with a dark number is the most widely used combination in the cattle business because it is easy to read in almost any light. Most operations run it as the everyday herd colour and keep red, orange or purple for the animals that need to stand out. These arrive stamped in sequence from the 1 to 200 range, which takes the writing job out of calving prep entirely. Pull the next tag, put it in, write the pair down. The numbers are large with a long neck below the flag so the tag hangs and swings where you can read it from either side. The Z1 is a one-piece tag. There is no rivet to seat and no back button, so it goes in with one squeeze of the one-piece applicator. The self-piercing tip makes a small clean incision instead of punching out a plug, and the pin pivots through so a calf that throws its head is less likely to tear the ear.
