White gives you the most contrast under a black tag marker, so if the main job of the tag is being readable from the far end of the corral or from a quad, this is the colour to start with. It also works as a neutral base colour if you use brighter tags to flag individual animals. The tags come blank, 25 to a package. Write them up ahead with a proper livestock tag marker rather than a ballpoint or felt pen, and let them dry before you bag them. Numbers on both sides is worth the extra minute, because you can read the calf from whichever way it happens to be standing. The Z1 is a one-piece tag. There is no rivet or back button to line up, so it goes on with a single squeeze of the one-piece applicator. The self-piercing tip cuts a small hole that heals in around the stem, and the smooth back means nothing hangs out to catch on wire or brush. Management and visual ID only.
