The tank that fits a handful of animals is a harder thing to find than either extreme. Too small and you are hauling water twice a day. Too big and it goes stale before it gets drunk. At 416 L (110 US gallons) this one holds roughly a day for a small bunch and turns over often enough to stay reasonably clean. Outside dimensions are about 135 by 91 cm (53 by 36 in) with a wall roughly 51 cm (20 in) high. There is a drain plug moulded into the bottom, which is the feature that decides whether a tank gets cleaned regularly or not. Pulling a plug takes ten seconds. Tipping 400 kg of water takes a tractor. Oval is the shape to pick when a tank has to sit along a fence line, or through a panel so two pens can share it. It also gives more drinking edge per litre than a round tub of the same volume, which matters when several animals come up at once. Scrub it out when you drain it rather than topping up over algae. Polyethylene takes a stiff brush without scratching into a surface that holds growth, and the plug means you can do the whole job with a hose and five minutes.
