The short answer
For a tank watering a group of cattle or horses, go with the K&H Ultimate Stock Tank De-Icer 1500W. It is the largest model in the K&H line and has a full protective cage, a float ring and a cord clip. Its thermostat holds the water just above freezing, so it only works when it needs to. Pipestone Farm Supply carries it and ships across Canada.
We can get this moving for you quickly, and depending on where you are, your parcel can arrive in as little as 1 to 2 business days once it's on the road. Pickup in Millet, Alberta is free, and shipping is free on orders over $199.99 to most addresses.
The K&H Ultimate 1500W covers every tank size on K&H's chart, up to 150 gallons, in every zone. It is the largest in the line, so on a smaller tank it is more than enough and the thermostat runs it only as needed. Pipestone Farm Supply carries it.
You do not have to choose with the K&H Ultimate Stock Tank De-Icer. Leave the float ring on and it floats. Unscrew the ring and it sits on the bottom, which suits tanks where animals keep shoving a floater into a corner.
Yes, with the K&H Ultimate Stock Tank De-Icer. K&H states it will not damage liners or plastic tanks, and it is rated for steel tanks too. Pipestone Farm Supply carries it along with Tuff Stuff tanks.

No, it keeps water open. The K&H Ultimate holds water just above freezing and cannot be set higher, so you pay only to stop the ice.
Yes. K&H says more than one de-icer can be used in a tank when they are spread apart for even coverage. Each one needs its own suitable outlet, since a 1500-watt unit is most of a 15-amp circuit by itself.
