Hands-free reading only works if the tag comes within range without anyone steering the animal. In a wide alley, or a gate that cattle come through at their own pace, a small antenna leaves gaps and animals go by unread. That is worse than not reading at all, because the session still looks complete. The large antenna measures 873 by 603 mm with a 15 to 38 mm profile and reads to about 1 m from a single panel. It handles all ISO HDX and FDX-B tags, and pairs with the XRP2 panel reader, which does the actual reading, storage and transmission. The antenna is plug and play with automatic tuning, so there is no setting up by hand. Mount it where the tag will pass closest and most predictably, usually alongside a race at head height for the class of stock, or on a gate post animals must pass squarely. Steel close to the antenna affects performance, so give it what clearance the layout allows and test with a known tag before relying on a session. Where one antenna still leaves a gap, two large antennas run through the dual antenna adaptor come close to doubling the effective read distance. That is the usual fix for wide races and for high-headed cattle carrying a tag well off the panel.
